The Technical Universities Association was established in 1993 on the initiative of the leading technical universities of Russia on the basis of the section of technical universities of the Eurasian Association of Universities
The first technical university in our country is Bauman Moscow State Technical University. On July 27, 1989 the USSR State Committee for Public Education made a decision to rename Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School. Later Leningrad, Tomsk, Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institutes and Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute received the status of technical universities, which resulted from deep qualitative changes in their scientific and educational activities.
In 1991 in Baku the congress of the Association of Universities of the USSR decided to accept Bauman Moscow State Technical University to the Association and to form a section of technical universities on its basis.
On November 3, 1992 the Technical Universities Association was established as part of the section.
The founding members were Bauman Moscow State Technical University, St. Petersburg State Maritime Technical University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Tomsk Polytechnic University and South Ural State University.
The constitutive meeting considered the draft regulation of the Technical Universities Association, elected the President of the Association — the Rector of BMSTU Igor B. Fedorov and the Academic Secretary of the Association — the Vice-Rector of BMSTU Valeriy K. Baltyan, agreed on the council of the Association, which included the rectors of the founding universities Yu.S. Vasiliev, G.P. Vyatkin, Yu.P. Pokholkov, D.M. Rostovtsev, I.B. Fedorov and a scientific secretary V.K. Baltyan.
On March 23, 1993 the Technical Universities Association was officially registered as a legal entity (Certificate of Registration of a Non-Commercial Organization, No. 1149-1) by the Department for Registration of Non-Profit Organizations of the Department of Public Non-Profit Organizations of Moscow Government.
